Don’t forget to enter…

the sweat pink giveaway!  Ends tomorrow at 9pm est.

Yesterday was a teacher work day (yay no kids!!) so I was able to get up before school at a non- ungodly hour (6am) and go to the gym before putting in my hours for the day.

It was awesome.  “Sleeping in” never felt so good.  Although…when I got to the gym it was packed.  Packed like a fraternity basement during Greek week.  No treadmills.  No bikes.  No room.

Luckily, there were a few red ellipticals ready for me.

I warmed up with 15 minutes on the elliptical before running 3 miles and cooling down with 10 minutes on the bike.  Again, I had ADD when it came to choosing something and sticking with it.  Luckily I had Shamless to keep me company.  I only have 20 minutes left in the ENTIRE SEASON.  It’s very sad.  After my cardio I realized it was light outside and I should probably go…so I rushed through my abs and skipped an arm circuit.  I know, real tough for me to skip something like arms.

School was full of report cards, cleaning, organizing, grading, planning, and everything else that falls into the job description of “teacher”.   Busy day, but my reward was getting to go OUT to lunch like the rest of America can during the week.  It’s crazy how nice it is to be able to leave for a couple of minutes.

After work I was my incredibly nice and thoughtful self and ran out to get some things for the fave’s bathrooms.  I figure if I just go buy it and set it all up without having him tell me no immediately, I actually had a chance of everything staying.

If I do say so myself, it looks pretty darn good.  And I think he’s going to like it… and finally, the bathroom will have COLOR!

I know, it’s so exciting.  I am a grown-up and I get excited about silly things like bathroom colors.

Anyway, in other news and a question I have for you,on Sunday the fave and I had an argument/ disagreement/ not productive conversation about calories burned on machines at the gym.

Do you believe the machines at the gym or do you think they’re a bit high?  The treadmill says I burn 120 calories per mile, but myfitnesspal says it’s around 90.  I mean, that’s 30 full calories per mile that I used to think I was burning!

What do you think?  Are the machines correct when you enter your weight?

I love lazy Sundays.

I also love lazy Sundays that turn into productive Sundays.

Yesterday, after approximately 2.5 hours of lying in bed drinking coffee (which came after 10+ hours of sleep), fave-ster and I decided to make the Sunday trek to the gym.

I thought we had agreed upon a full day of rest (you know, like God and Chick-fil-a intended) and a full day of movies and tv, but because it was so sunny and pretty we are going to hold off until next weekend.  I reeeeeeeally want to start season 4 of Dexter…hint, hint, hint.

I was a little sore from my humongous 6 miler Saturday (I get it.  It’s going to take awhile to get back), so after we ran the mile to the gym I decided on the red elliptical (30 minutes) and the stair stepper (10 minutes) before doing abs and walking a mile home.  I have just one episode left of Shameless and I have to say, I’m kind of sad about it.  Even though every episode I thank God that my life isn’t what’s on TV, it really helps pass the time when doing cardio, for which I’ve had ADD during lately.  My gym cannot be counted on for good, recent trashy mags either.  I need some new shows.

When I got home I made a surprisingly delicious protein shake (2 scoops Aria powder, 1 cup vanilla almond milk, 1/2 banana, 2 handfuls of spinach and a little cocoa powder).

I decided to finally tackle Derby’s automatic feeder.

As you know, the pea brained little sneaker figured out how to stick her paw up into the turning mechanism and pick out food.  Unfortunately for me, this took out all the usefulness of actually having an automatic feeder.  Being the handy person I am (which isn’t much… my dad gave me the idea), and also being the fed up cat owner that’s been woken up at 4am lately for breakfast, I decided I was going to fix it or die trying.

I cut up a Greek yogurt lid and taped it behind the little plastic things that Derby’s bent out of shape.

fixed feeder

Guess what… it works.  Hallelujah and praise Jesus!

No longer can Derby get her grubby little paw up in there… and finally, I can turn the thing back on and forget about waking up at 4am.  I suddenly became handy and Derby suddenly is stalking around my apartment looking for crumbs.

Poor girl… but I’m pretty sure she’d eat me out of house and home if I let her.

My accomplishment gave me the energy to talk the fave into going shopping (!!!) for some new bathroom stuff for his house (towels, rugs, accessories).  No bathroom stuff today, but we did end up purchasing some really cute end tables for the bedrooms!  Thank goodness because my side has been a TV tray for the last 2 years.

In our little adventure out in civilization, I managed to spend a boatload of money at World Market on random food items including gummy peaches.  Seemed like such a good idea at the time.  I also bought a set of 12 dinner forks— this may not sound like much to you, but as of a few months ago, I only had 3 forks.  I’m not sure what happened to the rest of them, but they are no where to be found, and rewashing 3 forks all week was turning into a pain.

All of that activity really upped my appetite, so margharita pizza it was.

marg pizza (Old picture, same delicious pizza.)

After three cheesy slices and a piece of garlic bread, it was bedtime.

Perfect weekend.  I was handy, I had a good run, and I got to eat my favorite pizza (order of importance from least to greatest).

Did you do anything super handy this weekend?

6 miles and a GIVEAWAY!!!

So, Saturday the fave and I ran to the gym because it, again, was gorgeous outside.  For some reason, that mile was H.A.R.D.  I was breathing hard, my legs felt heavy, and my throat felt dry.  Anyway, I decided that since I ran a successful 5 miles earlier this week, I might try again today, to make it a total of 6.

No pain!!!  I can barely even feel the orthies anymore.  And I ran 6 whole miles and it was glorious.  My foot didn’t hurt at all during or after the run, which is such a huge improvement from two months ago.  Plus, we walked a mile home and I felt great.

I also did a little circuit workout after my run that included 2x of:

  • 30 alternating bicep curls
  • 30 alternating front lateral raises
  • 20 shoulder presses
  • 20 triceps extensions
  • 20 front rows
  • 20 pushups
  • 50 crunches
  • 50 bicycle crunches
  • 25 weight ball crunches

I know I only did it twice, but my arms were tiiiiiiiiiired.

I think maybe I had so much motivation was because I was sporting my new tank and shoelaces from!

Jamie contacted me a week ago about their “Sweat Pink” movement-

Sweat Pink is all about sharing the joy that comes from living a healthy lifestyle. It’s a celebration of hard work and well-earned rewards. Our pink shoelaces are a proud demonstration of all we’ve achieved, and all we plan to become.

So, lucky me received a cute tank and some amazingly bright pink shoelaces!

    pink collage

The tank is super comfortable and fits really well, and the laces..well, let’s just say the laces will keep me from getting lost in the dark 🙂  They make my boring shoes really pop…and I love it!

Sooo because you are awesome RDK readers, Jamie also is giving me THREE tanks and shoelaces to giveaway!  The tanks run like American Apparel sizes, so I got a medium to be safe- it’s a little big, but I’d rather it be bigger than too small and muffin toppy.

Chicken Jambalaya… and Friday

Yesterday started out with me wanting to throw my phone across the room when the alarm went off at 5:20.  I laid in bed trying to go back to sleep for 15 minutes, then decided I might as well get up and go to the gym.  I had sweats on, thinking it was January 27 and chilly.. but boy it was muggy and warm and it felt like April.

I did 35 minutes on the red elliptical (aka the hard one) followed by 15 minutes on the stair master/ stair stepper/ whatever it’s called.  I had planned on doing a little circuit for my arms like I did Tuesday, but two things held me back.  1.  One of the scary trainers was taking up allllllll the space in the tiny area allotted for free weights and non-meatheads, and 2.  it was just about time for me to leave (shouldn’t have laid in bed those extra 15 minutes), so I did some abs and called it a morning.

On Fridays I like to reward myself with non-homemade coffee, and today I chose Starbucks.  Unfortunately for me, I spilled it all over myself and the seat on the way to work.  And I smelled like coffee all day.

Luckily, I was wearing black stretchy pants (fitness club Fridays!) so no one could see where the stench was coming from.

It was an absolutely gorgeous day in Richmond- warm, sunny, and pretty blue skies.

january weather

Now I know that drive doesn’t look absolutely gorgeous, but looking at the sky put me in a great mood.

So great, that when I got home I threw some stuff in the Crockpot to make dinner for the fave.

Chicken Jambalaya- Another Crockpot recipe- Modified from Fitness

  • 1.5 lbs of chicken breast, cut into pieces
  • 12 oz smoked chicken or turkey sausage
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes with jalapenos
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 bag of frozen peppers and onions (I used 12 oz)
  • 1 box of jambalaya mix (I used Zatarain’s Reduced Sodium 8oz)

Place chicken, sausage tomatoes, water and frozen veggies in a crockpot.  Cook on low for 2-2.5 hours or high for 5-6 hours.  Stir in rice mix and cover and cook for 45 minutes more (or until liquid is absorbed) until rice is tender.  Enjoy!

chicken jambalaya

It was really filling and spicy, and I’ll definitely be making it again.  We have a ton of leftovers too, and I think it might be better cold than hot (just a few bites before breakfast is okay, right?)

I also made one of my favorite desserts- banana pudding- buuuuuut it was almost halfway eaten before I realized I hadn’t taken a picture.  Whoops.

Anyway, after lying in bed and watching a couple of episodes of Homeland this morning, it’s now time to hit the gym.  I’ve got some new gear on today that I’ll tell you all about tomorrow!

Get excited… because there might be a giveaway in the future!

65 in January?

I’ll take it.

After school I was feeling a little stomach-achy and thought I might perhaps be getting the little stomach bug my PiC has had for the past day (can’t blame it on Cici’s unfortunately), I forced myself out the door to run because, hey, it was 65 degrees outside.  No way I was going to waste that delicious sunshine in the gym or asleep in my bed or puking in the toilet.

I forgot how much harder running outside is…and how much more  I like it, despite not being able to watch TV.

I ran 5.2 miles in 44 minutes… my longest and fastest run in about two months.  And it was awesome, besides the fact that my legs felt like concrete and my orthos were digging into  my arches.  But great news- I got to use my Garmin for the first time this year, which was super exciting.

I was also successful in not tripping/ falling/ injuring myself, although there was a little stick that got in my way once.

After my run I sat on the couch for a few before heading back out to dodgeball.

This is me last week, clearly looking like a total and complete dummy.

Luckily, because my team is Kentucky blue (serious win for me) I wore a UK tshirt last week.

Tonight, we got killed.   I did absolutely nothing productive to assist my team in trying to win… and, if you can imagine a bunch of ‘roided up men throwing balls at each other as hard as possible… you can also imagine a fight.  In all my years of dodgeball (this is 4), I’ve never actually seen a bench clearing beat down but tonight  it definitely came close.  I huddled myself in the corner and stayed out of it.  Thankfully, because have you seen my guns lately?

After losing horrendously, I was ready for some dinner and a beer, so I met my friend Leah at my favorite spot, Joe’s Inn.

It’s seriously my favorite.  If you’ve been reading my blog, you know that they make homemade feta.  HOMEMADE FETA.  I still can’t get over how delicious it is.   I actually brought the extra from my dinner home.  Weird… but it’s so good.

Anyway, in other news of my day, we got free donuts at work.

blueberry donut

Is there ever going to be a day where someone gives me free donuts and I actually eat them all?  Like, the whole donut? Because today I had one amazing bite that cost me at least 100 calories.

Speaking of 100 calories, I also tried one of these today.

apple vitatop

They’re marketed as being 100 delicious calories with 8 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein and organic sugar.  Well, they might look like a tiny apple muffin top, but they do not taste like one.  I’ve read a lot of good things about them, but I am not impressed.  Maybe the chocolate ones are better, but I was really sad that these weren’t even worth the 100 calories.  I had to throw it away, and typically I can stomach anything that includes any type of carb.

It’s Thursday night and I’ve got nothing on the agenda for the weekend except some snuggling with the Derbster and the fave and movies and wine.  Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend?

Three Things Thursday 18… I think

1.  I’ve been eyeing the new colored denim jeans.

colored jean

Here’s the thing.  I’m almost 00% positive I cannot pull them off.  I’m not fashionable, I’m not hip, and I often get made fun of because I happen to wear cardigans.  A lot.

2. I’ve always said I will never, ever, ever go on a cruise.

Yes, the thought of an unlimited buffet of any kind of food I could ever want or eat does appeal to me, however, I’d rather not be stuck on a floating piece of metal with two- four thousand strangers.

Now I definitely will never go on a cruse.  Hearing about the Concordia disaster and missing people and the dumb captain really just is the nail in the coffin (bad analogy?).

cruise ship crash

So don’t try and surprise me with any cruises

3.  I just got my W-2 form this past week.

I really make no money.   And that includes the tutoring and summer school I taught last year.

It’s sad, really.

So, maybe I’ll try and get those taxes done this weekend.  Maybe this year will be the year I get some good money back.  But based on the past 3 years of living in Virginia… probably not.

Does anyone else feel this way come tax season?

Positives and Negatives

Positives and Negatives to my day.

1.  It was a half day for the kids.

Positive:  The kids left at 12:45 and I didn’t have to teach math.

Negative: I had to sit through two hours worth of meetings that could have been done in ten minutes.

2.  Because it was a half day, I got free lunch.

Negative:  It was CiCi’s pizza.  Kind of gross.

Positive:  Now I know what CiCi’s pizza tastes like and I never want to go back.  Ever.

Negative:  My PiC got food poisoning and may or may not have barfed her guts out.

Positive: I did not barf my guts out.

3.  Wednesday is my long day at the gym.

Positive:  I ran FIVE, count ‘em, FIVE miles in my orthies.  Most since my 8 miles on December 10!

Negative:  The orthies kind of bothered me…still getting used to that arch and everything attached to it.

Positive: I finished another episode of Shamless.

Negative:  That puts me one closer to the end of the season.

Positive:  It’s spin class day!!!  Plus, my favorite instructor is back from surgery!

Negative: Nothing really.  It was an overall great day at the gym.

4.  I finished another Myoplex Lite bar after the gym.

Positive: I love them.  They’re so delicious, and eating only half at a time keeps me full and protein filled.

Negative: I only have one left.  Dang.

5.  Dinner was made by the fave and not me!

steak arugula

Positive:  I’ve been craving some meat.  Non-chicken meat.  Steak and arugula salad = my new favorite.

Negative:  I ate way too much.  Two helpings plus some when cleaning up is too much. Stop eating like a 250lb man, Kathleen.

6.  This was in my inbox.

st jude

Positive:  Of course I laughed and took a picture.

Negative:  Now I feel guilty for not giving more money to St. Jude.

7.  It’s Wednesday.

Positive:  Week is halfway over.

Negative:  It’s still not Friday.

Did you have any positives or negatives to your day?
