365 days until I’m 30

WOAH. 

What a great day. 

I seriously had such a wonderful birthday yesterday.  Sorry for being mushy, but this post is going to be all about the mush.

Derbster woke me up at 4:30 with a sweet yowling sound.  Thanks, cutie kitty, you’re the best.

Luckily, the yowl reminded me I need to do a little gym time before the day started… so, I bundled up and headed to workout.  I was a little sore from my speed run Monday, so I ‘warmed up’/ actually worked out with 35 minutes on the elliptical before running a slow and steady 3 miles.  I tried to repeat my lame arm circuit from Sunday, but one of the d-bag trainers got in my way and made me uncomfortable, so I just ended up going home.

In my post yesterday morning, I mentioned I was going to treat myself to Starbucks.  Ten minutes after the post, I opened a b-day card from the fave (who is currently soaking up the sun/ working/ being someone else’s b in Arizona), that had a Starbucks gift card!

After my coffee run, I got to school greeted by a room decorated with Kentucky colored streamers.  Plus, an entire tray of Kentucky themed cupcakes (with pb chips helloooooooo delicious), and this amazing bag of all of my favorite things.

Yep, most of it is edible: myfavorite cilantro dressing from Trader Joes, some sort of delicious white chocolate peanut butter, Reese’s eggs, gum, protein bar and trashy mags for the gym.  YES!!!

Oh.  And yes, it’s fun to eat.  Dangerous, because it may only last two days… but fun for sure.

That jar is not making it until 2014.  No way.  Maybe not even next week.

School was good (for a Tuesday) and I got some surprise gifts from my parents (yessssss more books! nerd alert).   At school by the way, I forced all the kids to call me Queen B all day long (Um, Miss, I mean Queen B can I get a drink of water?  Oh whoops Queen B I’m sorry.  Queen B did you read this?)  It was amazing.  I only wish I had one of those Burger King crowns to wear everyday.   I will never tire of hearing myself being called queen.  Never.

After school I had this sweeeeeeet baby cheeses school board meeting to attend where they finally recognized us for wining an award that only one other school in the state got this year.  They said a bunch of nice things about us all and told everyone how awesome we were…. annnnnnnnnnnd then called me out for being there on my birthday.  In front of the superintendent.  In front of important people.  I got embarrassed and left immediately after to go meet my BFF for a late dinner and wine.  Obvi.

We had planned on going to a fancy schmancy restaurant for dinner, but I decided I wanted a mouthful of feta instead, speaking of baby cheeses.

I received some pretty hilarious gifts from my BFF which include, but are not limited to:

Overall it was the perfect day.  Well… perfect would be at an island somewhere drinking some sort of fruity, delicious and calorie free drink.. buuuuuuut I’ll take it.  Thanks to all my family and friends for making my Tuesday so special!!

I also want to say a big happy 1st/4th birthday to the only leap baby I know, Molly!  xoxoxo

Today is my B-day, and people around here just go crazy for it. I don’t know why. Oh! Fun fact. I share my birthday with Eva Longoria. So, I have a perfect ice-breaker if I ever meet Terry Hatcher.

 

Actually, it’s my birthday.. not Michael Scott’s.

Instead, I have to work.  Maybe I’ll just go to work and order all the kids around while I sit eating brain balls (skittles) in front of them all day long.

Oh wait… I already do that. (Just kidding.  I gave up candy for Lent.)

My expectations for my 29th birthday include but are not limited to: 

  • The kids must call me queen all day long.  I will not answer to my actual name.
  • The kids must be super nice and friendly and not lazy all day.  Or else they fail.
  • Some sort of awesome school board meeting that I have to attend (check, that’s happening).
  • A birthday surprise from the fave (since he’s out of town, I’m expecting big…and now we’re celebrating for an entire month… sorry fave, you lose).
  • A birthday dinner with the BFF
  • Sweet Frog
  • Some sort of milky way cake (candy’s in the cake, it doesn’t count) that the PiC teased me with last week… or something just as delicious.
  • Derby not waking me up at 3 am for breakfast.   
  • All my cellulite must disappear by the end of the day.  Forever.  For-ev-er.

I know, I’m not asking for a lot. 

Anyway.  It’s my BIRTHDAY!   Just in case you didn’t hear.

Other than that… nothing else is new. 

If you’re interested in any type of working out (you know you are), last night I did my weekly speed workout-

  • 1 mile warm up at 6.8
  • 1/2 mile at 8.1-8.5
  • 1/4 mile at 7.0                                                                                                                                                                                       +++ repeat above 6 times+++
  • 1 mile cool down at 7.0

Total- 6.5 miles in 51.5 minutes.  I then stretched while a creepster at the gym stared at himself in the mirror for a full 3 minutes.  I did about 10 minutes of abs before calling it a day.

Not too shabby for a Monday. 

I would really like to do a speed run outside at a track, but I don’t even know where an available track is in Richmond…one that I can use when any high school is not.  I also am afraid I won’t push myself as much as the treadmill will.  Does anyone else have this fear?

Anyway… back to me.

No Bake Cookies

Happy Monday! 

Yesterday morning started with a super early Sunday gym session since I was headed to Godfrey’s Drag Queen brunch (more on that in a later post).  Sunday mornings must be the best time to go to the gym- there was no one there!  Maybe 6 other crazies and me = we’re all absolutely complete lunatics OR smarties for getting there and getting the workout finished before the day got started.

Probably the first.

Anyway, I did 40 minutes on the red elliptical on a higher level than I’ve done before, plus 10 minutes on the stair machine for a little added cardio.  I did a quick 20 minute arm circuit, which is totally giving me tiny little lines of definition.  When I say tiny, I really mean invisible.

Quick arm circuit (repeat 3x)

  • 40 alternating bicep curls
  • 20 shoulder presses
  • 20 triceps extensions
  • 20 overhead triceps extensions
  • 20 upright rows
  • 20 chest flys
  • 20 pushups (girly if you’re me)

My arms are feeling a little sore, so I’m hoping all those minutes I put into it are actually paying off. 

The rest of Sunday was spent with a little friend time, a little drag queen time, and a little cleaning time.

Those he/she’s definitely knew how to move.  The cougars were loving every second of the performances.  There were sequins everywhere… on the performers and the cougs.  Hilarious!

When I got home, my sweet tooth was begging me to make something delicious, so I made one of my childhood favorites, No Bake Cookies.

They hit the spot.  Speaking of peanut butter mixed with chocolate…

I really don’t think you can go wrong when you mix any type of peanut butter with any type of chocolate.  Although if this were my creation I’d maybe do Triple Peanut Butter Chocolate Sundae.  Yep… that’s what I’d do.

My weekend ended with my favorite movie.

Calf Cramps = No Sleep

Friday morning I woke up with calf cramps.  So, what’s a girl to do at 5:15am? 

Go to the gym, like a crazy person.

So I did.  Hello ambition, I like you too.. buuut not enough to do this everyday.

Anyway, my workout was basically just stretching out my legs and getting my muscles unstiff (that’s not a word, I know).  I did some fairly easy cardio on the red elliptical for 35 minutes, then ran a slooooooooooooow mile.  My legs felt much better after getting them moving, and then I did abs plus a short 15 minute arm circuit (you can almost see muscles, it’s crazy). 

One thing I noticed is that I had a tiny bit of foot pain after my run- the same kind of throbbing pain on the side of my foot.  So, back to PT exercises it is for me.  I guess I’ve been pretty  bad at actually doing them lately, so I guess it’s not something I can slack on for a month and expect it to be normal. 

After another Zumba Friday at work, I relaxed with some friends and wine.  My favorite kind of Friday nights.  Cheese, wine, crackers and good conversation.

It felt awesome to sleep in on Saturday morning.  Awesome.  Awesome, awesome, awesome. 

I need to do this more often. 

After trying (and failing) to make a presentable looking omelet, I finally dragged myself off the couch to the gym.  Somehow I managed 7 miles in 59 minutes.  My legs felt great, which is shocking considering the cheese and wine I had Friday night.  I did about 15 minutes of abs before calling it a day…and as I was getting ready to leave, I got the best compliment ever.

Some guy came up and asked if I was training for something… I nodded yes and he said, and I quote, “You’ve got runner written all over you.”

I actually look like a runner to someone who doesn’t know me!  Mission accomplished!  I never thought I actually look like a runner.  I look kind of in shape, I look like someone who works ou , but I have never thought I actually look like a ‘runner’.  Best compliment ever.

So I left the gym, feeling super awesome and skinny and fit so I decided to go try those colored jeans that other people can pull off.

How on earth do people wear these?  I mean, check out the tightness around those calves.  I’ve always thought I had normal sized calves, but the jeans tell me otherwise.  Welcome to log leg country.

I literally could not even move.  Or breathe.  I tried the whole “stretch out your skinny jeans” routine and I kept expecting to hear one of the ripping sounds… Luckily, since my legs couldn’t move the jeans stayed in tact. 

Plus, those pink jeans look super cool with my orange sweater.

Old Navy, get your sizes straight. 

It might be my own fault thinking I could buy wearable jeans at Old Navy.  I love to get t-shirts and stuff there, but jeans are a no go for me.  So that was kind of a waste of time. 

Although now I know that colored jeans are not for me.  I cannot pull them off.  I am seriously not that fashionable… or stick thin, so at least I found that out.

Maybe I should go back to get those jeans and use them as compression pants to combat my calf cramps.  Way cheaper and similar concept. 

I’m off to brunch and to enjoy Sunday before a full five day work week.

Overly Ambitious

Thursday was a LONG day.  Looooooooooooong.  Thank goodness it’s Friday.  (Do I say that every week?)

Yesterday some of my fellow awesome and amazing teachers and I had a meeting with the superintendent of our school system…. Just us, some county people, a couple community people, and the superintendent.  It was stressful.  There may or may not have been sweat stains on various people in the room.

We are trying to get a new program started at our school that encourages kids to play. 

What?  You think that’s strange?  The sad fact is, most kids don’t know how to just play.  They know how to play video games and watch tv and fight and pick at each other… but they don’t know how to play.  It’s very sad.  We’re trying to find out how to get grant money to get this recess program at our school next school year.  I actually couldn’t tell you if the meeting went well.  I think they all thought we were funny and awesome.. but that doesn’t mean they’re going to take the time to find 25 grand.

Does anyone want to send me a check to go towards the playing fun? 

Anyway… blah blah blah.  I know.  That doesn’t interest you.

What might actually interest you is that this afternoon I ran nearly 11.5 miles with my PiC and one of her running friends.  On a Thursday afternoon.  After work.  It was pretty amazing.

It started out as an overly ambitious 13 mile run… that, due to timing and light, we only got 11.5 before calling it quits.

A few things:

  • It’s the first time I’ve run outside in about 3 months and it was 70 degrees.
  • It’s my longest run since the marathon.
  • I finally blew the dust off my Garmin and it still worked.
  • I only listened to music for 20 minutes! Wowzers.
  • This was the first time I’ve run with people for a long run.  And I kind of loved it. 
  • I had no foot pain until the last half mile.. the orthies were screaming at me to stop.
  • I felt great tummy wise…… until I got finished.  Then,my stomach was back to its old tricks.. vomit and all. 

Overall it was a great run.  We kept it at about an easy 9:15 pace and talked most of the way, which was a nice change for me since I usually run alone.  There were a couple times when I typically would have stopped to walk for a second, but because I was with people, I couldn’t.  My legs felt pretty strong and my lungs didn’t feel like they were going to give out on me, so that’s a positive. 

However, when I got finished I started getting that queasy feeling that started creeping up on me during my training days.  You know the feeling… like your body stored up everything for the last week and is choosing now to punish you.

Do you want to know the worst part (besides seeing my lunch again and not being able to eat for 3 hours after the run)?   I didn’t get my Mexican fiesta that I’ve been planning on all week.  Oh Corona, I’ve been dreaming of you.

So that sucked.  A lot.  And it kind of makes me reconsider this whole running thing.  Why does this happen so often?!??!

Maybe it’ll be better next time…although this is really impacting my decision to do a race in a place I’ve never been…

Does anyone else have issues like this?  Am I the only one?

Ten Things Thursday

I’ve got a lot to say today, so I upped it to ten random things.

1.  I skipped cycle yesterday and now I feel bad about it.  My PiC was getting her hair did and I reverted back to my old ways and didn’t want to go alone.  I THOUGHT I GOT OVER THIS FEAR!!!!!! 

So anyway, I ran 5 slower miles and rode the regular bike for 15 minutes.  Boring.  I got boring, again.

2.  I reeeeeeeeally don’t like the new “I’m way better than you and hotter than you plus I’m an actress”  housewife from the OC.

3.  I saw a guy get pulled over yesterday on the way home for school.  Immediately, there were five cop cars surrounding him.  FIVE. 

What did he do to get five cops to get him?

4.  It’s 70 degrees in Richmond, VA today.  Tomorrow it will be 75.  Yeah for global warming!  (just kidding… kind of)

5.  George Huguely was convicted for 2nd degree murder for killing his girlfriend in a drunken rage.

6.  I read an article on Yahoo yesterday about the five healthiest cheeses.   Um, yep.   Healthy cheese. Thank goodness I’m all about health and cheese.

7.  I made these last night.  They kind of actually tasted like cinnamon rolls… plus, they’re like 180 calories for 2 little muffins!  SO good. If I only had icing in the fridge…my life would be complete.

8.  Today is National Bread Day.

9.  I turn 29 in less than a week.  I’m a little nervous.  I don’t know why.  That’s just one year until 30…which I know, I know… isn’t old… but it’s 30. That’s like the last big one after 21. 

10.  I still haven’t decided if I’m running in the Hooters Half Marathon next Sunday.  I have 3 days until the price goes up… so I need advice.  Yay or nay?

Lenten Promises

Before we get to those, let’s talk about Tuesday.  Specifically, Tuesday after a long weekend/ first snowfall of the year and how it makes kids crazy.  CRAZY, I tell you.

Thank goodness it’s Wednesday already.

Last night after work I made it to the gym to find all the treadmills open and ready to go, so no pissy sourpuss here.  Although, I only ran a mile before doing 60 minutes on the red elliptical.  It was tough.  I set the resistance really high and tried not to hold on much (strengthening those hip muscles, as PT Alan would tell me), and I was a sweaty monster when I was finished.  My legs also felt like jelly.  The good news is my feet did not fall asleep and I felt like I actually burned some calories.  My legs are pretty sore right now, which is a good thing.

I also caught up on some trashy celeb gossip where I found that A) shocking… Scott is out getting hammered while Kourtney is with child, 2) Angelina shot Brad down to marriage and is still a huge B, and D) the bachelor Ben is kind of terrible.  Sorry if I offended anyone with that last one.

Anyway, back to the title. 

Today is Ash Wednesday… the first official day of Lent.  If you’re Catholic, you’re not supposed to eat meat today, fyi.  Today is also the day lots of people make mini New Years Resolutions.. because it’s only for forty days if you don’t count the weekends.  Many people give up something, like a luxury, or fast as a form of  penitence. 

Many other people use Lent as a diet.  Like the girl in high school who only ate grapes at lunch.  Or the person I worked with who gave up calories. 

That being said, I (who believe me, am not the most devout Catholic) try to give up something that will be difficult for me, as well as do something to make myself a better person.

Past examples: 

  • Meat.  Oh those years I gave up meat were soooooooo hard.  Not only did I have to find protein elsewhere to keep my body going, but I literally craved sliced turkey all of the time.  It was so difficult.
  • Candy.  Last year I could not stop thinking about candy.  For the entire time.  ENTIRE TIME. 
  • Stop cussing.  I sometimes have a sailor mouth.  I’ve done better  lately and am saying F instead of the entire F word, or B instead of the entire B word.. but sometimes I cuss.  And sometimes it gets a little out of control.  Like a lot out of control.
  • Be more patient.  Yep, believe it or not, I’m not always patient with my kiddos.  Especially when they act exceptionally not smart.  Count to ten and take some deep breaths.
  • Go to church more…which is at least once, because I’m not a regular church goer these days. 
  • Be a better daughter… like, don’t snap at my mom when she asks all.those.questions. (love you mom)
  • Diet coke… oh the days of the 79 cent Circle K enormous diet Dr. Pepper are over.  With the little rabbit food ice cubes.  So good.  I miss the days where diet coke solved all my problems.

Anywhooooooooo today is starting a new Lenten season, so I figure I need to do something that will make me better at life.

Just for the record I completely respect everyone’s views on this topic, so please don’t be mean to me if you don’t celebrate.  Or if you think giving up something that you constantly eat/ do is dumb.  It’s a personal decision 🙂
