Busy week and weekend

The end of the week flew by…I was so busy and so exhausted I didn’t feel like blogging (or doing much else for that matter).

My workouts were as follows:

1.  Wednesday, I tried another two-a-day…although I laid in bed just a little too long in the morning, so I did a 20 minute circuit with abs and arms.   I started each set with a minute of jump roping (while trying my hardest not to kill Derby with the rope—she’s very curious) and did 4 sets which included a bunch of arm moves, push ups and abs moves.

Wednesday afternoon I had a really nice 7 mile run outside and it was total success.  No blisters, no tummy problems, and no tripping.  It  was one of those runs where I thought, “Oh yeah…this is why I love running.”

Too bad they don’t happen all the time.

2.  Thursday I pretended to do another two-a-day workout, but after stepping outside in freezing rain, I decided my time before work would better be spent watching How I Met Your Mother.  I”m pretty sure I made the right choice.

Thursday afternoon I made it to the gym and ellipticized for 45 minutes before running a mile and doing abs.  It was kind of miserable.  Even though I am using the elliptical more (like, 300% more than I did a year ago), I still hate it and I still dread the days I have to use it.

3.  Friday morning I woke up and did a 6 mile run in the secret women’s gym before work.  I felt okay leg-wise, but I was super bloated because the night before I ate this.  By myself.

blow toad greek pizza

It was really good (besides all the burnt crust pieces).

After work I negated my run  with baskets of chips, Mexican beers, and finally in a twist of cultures, sushi for dinner.  I almost fell asleep in my sashimi I was so tired.

Luckily (or unluckily), Saturday morning I had to wake up early to set up for the first annual 5k at my school.  (I could definitely have used at least 2 more hours of sleep.)

fun run

It was a HUGE success!  So much work, but the teachers I work with are amazing and dedicated and all the other qualities you’d want in someone who spends the entire day with your kid.   We worked really hard and luckily, everyone left the 5k and carnival happy and full of cotton candy.  One of our students (mine and my PiC) came in first place for the girls and won a brand new bike!  It was really fun to see the look of accomplishment when the kids crossed the finish line, and I’m so glad everyone had fun.

Anyway, I was also really glad when we left and got to come home and take a nap.  I fell asleep so quickly (and it helped that it was raining… my favorite naptime).

The rest of the weekend was pure laziness, except for the 7 mile run I had on Sunday.  I had originally planned on only running 5, but I was feeling really good and blasted out the last mile in 6:30.  Amazing.  I’m still a little amazed at how people run faster than that…and keep it up for an entire marathon.

Did you run any races this weekend?

Three Things Thursday

1.  Okay.  How many of you watched the Real Housewives of New Jersey this week??  They are terrible… yet so addicting!

Questions I have:

a.  What did Teresa do to Jacqueline???  I want to know!!!

2.  WTF happened to Ashley’s lips?

d.  How many pounds did Joe Giudice gain or has he always been that hefty?

4.  Why is Teresa so dumb?  So many examples…. Why is she staying with her cheating husband who hates their kids?  Why would she tell her brother that his wife will leave him for a richer man…. for no reason?  Why does she not see that she is kind of a B in her book?

5.  Did Caroline’s daughter break up with that bf?  He hasn’t been around for awhile.

6.  Is Kathy’s sister going to be the new funny character on the show?

2.  Last night I made this for dinner.  Not only was it filling and tasted good (oh, and mostly veggies), but it was really easy to make.

cabbage salad with beef

Cabbage Salad with Beef (adapted from Self magazine)

  • 1/3 cup lime juice
  • 1 tsp ginger seasoning
  • 2 tsp fish sauce
  • 1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 bag of cole slaw mix
  • ++Next time I’m adding some chopped purple cabbage as well.++
  • 1 cup chopped carrots
  • 1 bunch of chopped cilantro
  • 2 tsp chopped garlic
  • 1 lb beef (like the kind you use for stir fry)
  • a few handfuls of unsalted peanuts
  1. Mix the first four ingredients together in a small bowl.
  2. Combine the slaw and carrots in a large bowl.   Add dressing and toss to coat.
  3. Cook beef over medium heat with garlic.  (Next time we are grilling the meat though… It might have better flavor that way.)  Add a handful of chopped cilantro when everything is cooked and mix together.
  4. Add beef to salad and toss to combine.
  5. Finally, serve, adding a sprinkle of cilantro (or more if you want to inhale it like me) and some peanuts.  Voila!

3.  Yesterday, after at least a year (more like 2) of having my vacuum, I changed the bag.  Turns out, the bag wasn’t actually secure anyway, and the dust had been accumulating in the regular bag.  Imagine my surprise when all of the sudden I was covered in dust.  ALL OVER.

It was kind of like this.

Without Squints, of course.  And not nearly as funny.

What a classic, though.

That’s all I’ve got.

Happy Thursday!

Half Day Wednesday

I love Wednesdays.  Why?  Because once a month, Wednesday is a half day at school… for the kids.

Although I’ve got meetings and stuff all afternoon, it’s a nice change of pace.  Plus, we get some sort of lunch provided, which may not be a big deal to most of you, but anytime someone else is making my lunch, I’m happy.  I’m the one dying when The Biggest Loser’s temptation  challenge comes on… how are you supposed to resist all of that?

temptation challenge

I’m also a big buffet fan…let’s just say that in Vegas, I won.

Anyways, yesterday morning I pretended I might get up and run a few before work, but when I saw it was 36* outside, I said no f-ing way.  I think it was colder last night than it was all of February.  I even had frost on my car… luckily it warmed up, so the kids could let loose outside at recess.

Every Tuesday the fave and I say we are going to go to a movie.  I belong to some club where movie tickets only cost $6 on Tuesdays, so we pretend we are going to take advantage of the 50% discount.  Guess how many times it’s happened?  ZERO.  I don’t know why but I’m least likely to do something after work on Tuesday.   Besides Fridays, I think I am most tired on Tuesdays.  This week we were supposed to go see The Hunger Games…again.  I guess there’s always next week.

So, something awesome happened yesterday.

I won a pedometer from awesome Monica at runeatrepeat!

2 things:

  • I never win anything.  Ever.  (Except the time I was in first grade and I won the jelly bean estimating contest…152…don’t ask why I remember that.  I guessed correctly.)
  • I am SO excited to see how much I walk at school… I’ve always wondered how many steps I’m getting in per day, so if I remember to wear this little sucker I guess I’ll find out!

Do any of you wear pedometers?

What day of the week are you most tired?

Creature of Habit

It’s so nice when Tuesday rolls around…that means less than five days until sleeping in.  Or sleeping past 7.  7:30 counts as sleeping in these days.

Yesterday it was tough to wake up.  Tough.

Somehow, in some sort of amazing twist of motivation, I got my behind out the door and ran 2 miles.  I know, it’s not much.  But last week I said I was going to try and make Mondays my two-a-days for the next couple of weeks, so after checking my email, playing words with friends, and staring at the weather (45* and rainy)—oh, and wasting at least 20 minutes, I finally made it out the door.  I only had time for two miles before having to come back and get ready for work.

After work I headed to the gym to run 4 more miles, did a 20 minute arm circuit and abs.

So, for the day—6 miles, 20 minutes lifting, abs.  Not too terrible for Monday.  Plus, it felt nice to have that tiny bit of added extra energy throughout the day.  I’m planning on another two-a-day later this week.

Guess what we had for dinner last night?

taco salad

I am a creature of habit.  Taco salad.  Again.  Just so you know, that’s five times in the last five days.  It’s getting a little ridiculous.

But it’s SO good.  And SO easy to make.

In other random news, yesterday on the Today Show, they said that like 88% of people prefer to be photographed from the left side of their face.

right side

I prefer my right side.

I think it’s because from the left side…and from the front… you can see my lazy eye easier.

  left side

And who wants to be photographed with a lazy eye?

Sorry if I ever ruined anyone’s wedding pictures, btw.  I never realized what a liability I can be.

Which side do you prefer?  Left or right?

Are you a creature of habit?

Laziest weekend ever.

I know you care, but I basically did nothing of any importance.

This weekend I:

*Ate some variation of taco salad for three different meals.

* Watched 5 episodes of Dexter.

I’m really starting to get sick of this Lumen character.  Why can’t Dexter remember that having friends is definitely going to get him in trouble?!?  She’s going to die before the season is over, I bet.

* Watched The American.

Did not like.  Not even a tiny bit.  This picture makes it seem like it is going to be way more action packed than it actually is.  I do still love ol’ George Clooney.

*Spent an entire day in my pajamas.  For no reason.

It was amazing.  Although it could have been better if I had one of these outfits to run around in.

So- overall it was a perfectly lazy weekend.  I spent no money and barely exerted any energy, so I’m saved up for the crazy kids.   After last week, I needed it.  I also needed the margherita pizza I had for dinner last night.  And the glass (or two) of wine.

Do you ever have lazy weekends?  In my defense, it was gray and rainy ALL day yesterday… so that just basically means pajama day, right?

Oops, I did it again.

Remember when Britney Spears was awesome?

Like, red cat suit awesome?

Anyway, I did it again.  Not even on purpose.

I worked out twice in one day.  That’s twice in one week- I might be going bat shit crazy.

Yesterday the fave had to get up early, so I ran a quick 2.5 miles before school.  What I learned from this 2.5 miles is that my hair does not get sweaty enough for me to have to wash it (3 miles, however, does), so it takes way less time to get ready after.  I also learned that I have way less of a chance of getting hit by a car in the early morning hours or dying of heat stroke.

**Note to self:  Make sure it’s light out.  Sidewalk cracks can sneak up on you.**

After work yesterday I went to the gym and did another 5.5 miles on the good ol’ tready with Jack Bauer (total 8 for the day), a 20 minute arm circuit and abs.

(I’m aware I’m still a creepy cat lady.  In my defense, I googled “arm guns” and this is all that came up…besides real guns.  You get the point.)

Mentally, waking up in the 6 o’clock hour is so much easier than the 5 o’clock hour… plus knowing I only have to actually expend energy for 20-30 minutes sounds WAY better than trying to fit in a long workout before work.

This morning I dragged my sore legs to the gym at 5:45 and  Not even a tiny bit.  I basically hopped around on machines until I had put enough time in to call it a morning.  It was pretty much a pathetic workout, although Jack Bauer finally found that stupid nuclear bomb… but since there’s still 8 hours left in the day, something terrible is going to happen.

Anyway, enough about my terrible workouts for the week.  Although I was just trying to lose all those extra salt/wine pounds from last weekend, I’m actually starting to like working out twice a day.    Although now since I’m pretty much back to my normal weight s, this is happening.

So, per usual, I’m sitting on the couch drinking wine on a Friday night.  And someone is making me watch hockey, which is why I’m blogging.

It’s been a long week.

How was your week?  Any big plans for the weekend?

Three Things Thursday

1.  Question:  Is it appropriate to tell a woman she’s gained some weight, even if you don’t really know her very well?

Answer:  NO.

Just an FYI,  it is never appropriate to tell a female that you think she’s gained a few pounds.

Especially if you’re no spring chicken.

Especially if you’re battling diabetes and heart disease.

Especially if you’re getting ready to go to a work lunch, which she is obligated to attend.

Some people are so stupid.

2.  I saw this the other day…

best friends

Thank God Derby doesn’t know anyone else.

3.  Did you all hear about the baby found alive in a coffin in Argentina?

A baby was apparently born stillborn (according to the nurses and doctors who delivered her) and her parents had already been delivered her death certificate.  When they went to the morgue to have one more look at their lost baby, they found that she was actually alive in the tiny coffin.

Two opposite thoughts on this:

1.  How amazing that she was found alive 12 hours after being declared dead!

2.  How terrible are the doctors that declared her dead????  Holy shit.

What are your thoughts on this story from Argentina??  It definitely makes me want to never have a baby there, that’s for sure.
