Monthly Archives: August 2012

It is finally Friday. Finally.

Thursday’s workout:  7.5 mile run, miserable, terrible, not awesome.

I was not feeling it when I woke up yesterday (even though I went to bed early, got tons of sleep, ate no sugar the day before, did everything right), and boy was my run not fun.  I was going to do lots more miles, but seriously 7.5 was all I could manage.  And even then I thought I might die during it.

Friday’s workout:  Hopefully I made it to body pump this morning.   That was the late Thursday night plan with a few miles thrown in.

It’s been a long week.  LONG.  I forgot how much work working actually is… and I’m not sure I’m not ready for the kiddos on Tuesday.   I’ve cut out more lamination than miles run this week, and I’ve done and redone bulletin boards like they are going of style.   Labeling my book bins is almost out of the question… but that’s what I’ll be spending today doing and I probably won’t even finish.

Oh, and I killed a roach.   All by myself.  Don’t worry, there was screaming, girly noises and extra slaps by the book just to make sure he’s dead.

roach day 1

I took a picture only because I wanted to document the bravery I showed during the ordeal.

(I know… it sounds like I color and cut all day, but I promise I’ve got a real job and sometimes cutting and pasting for hours upon end really get to you.  I think I’ve inhaled more than my share of permanent marker scent and it’s starting to get to my head.   I swear, I’m a college AND grad school graduate.   Teaching is real work.)

I’m more ready for the weekend than I’ll ever be, and I have a feeling that on Tuesday I’ll start counting down to the weekend again.

The good news is I got to meet a few of my little buddies at Back to School night last night and booooooooy do they have some energy.  They are so, so, so cute and smiley and happy… and the difference between first grade and third grade is incredible, and I’m going to have to start drinking energy drinks to keep up.   I’m pretty sure one kid touched every single thing in my classroom in the 3 minutes he was there.

“What’s this for?”
”Why are there so many desks?”
”Are these pencils for us?”
”Can I have all of this?”
Are we using the playdoh now?”
When are you reading this book?”
I’ve seen that before at my old school.”

….and on and on.  And on.

Needless to say, it’s going to be a year where I need extra energy everyday, and then some!

Luckily, I’ll be starting out with a short, relaxing trip before Day 1 on Tuesday…

Add a glass of wine and that picture is perfect.

What are you doing for the long weekend?  Do you get Monday off?

Anyone else a teacher?

Winner (whoops!) and Happy Birthday!!!

Tuesday’s workout:  3 mile run, body pump class

I am tired.  Two days of work down, one million errands run, and gym time really takes it out of me.  I am pretty sure it was a win that I got to the gym at all….

In the craziness that has become ‘back to school’ week, I forgot to announce a winner for the PB2 Giveaway

Congratulations, Allison!!!  Email me your address at kathleenbarry4@yahoo.com so I can send the awesome people at PB2  your info!

And, because I have nothing else to say today…

Happy Birthday Fave!  Thank you for loving me and laughing at my jokes and reading this silly blog occasionally.  Also thank you for taking shots for Derby… she wants to rub her dander all over everything because of it.  You are the best ever!

Do you have any good stories for Wednesday?  Is it bad that I’m already in the habit of counting down for the weekend??

Monday’s workout:  7 mile run- 58 minutes, abs, stretching

Yesterday’s run felt great.  I ran fast (for me) and hard (that’s what she said) and my legs, lungs, feet, etc. felt good the entire run.

Maybe it was because I got new socks this weekend and they do not suck.

asics socks

These might be a winner!

You see, I’ve got this one favorite pair of socks that I love.  They’re Asics brand, but I’ve looked all over and can’t find them in the store anywhere…I only have one pair and I save them for my long run each week.  These might just be the ones I’m looking for- they felt great and didn’t slip and I’m giving them an 8/10 (pre wash and 3000 runs).

Anyway, yesterday was my first teacher day back at school.  Sunday night I was all excited and happy to get back to a ‘schedule’.  The fave told me I was Crazy (capital C).

When I woke up Monday I realized he was correct.  What was I thinking?!?!?!

I LOVE sleeping in and watching the Today Show and having a leisurely breakfast… I am dumb.   I forgot how busy the day is when you have work all day, go to the gym, run errands and make dinner… dang.

I miss you, Matt Lauer.

Do you have a favorite pair of socks that don’t slip when you workout?

13.5 miles and Body Worlds

Saturday’s workout:  13.5 mile run, a little over 2 hours.  I managed about a 9 min/mile pace—33.5 miles for the week

It was tough to get started.  First off, it was raining.  Secondly, it was raining.  Third, it was Saturday morning.

I headed to the gym (because of the aforementioned rain) and pounded out 13.5 on the treadmill.  It was sucky.  I don’t mind running on the treadmill for 7-8ish miles, but after that it is just miserable.  But because I hate running in the rain when I don’t have to, I forced myself to do the long run on the treadmill.  I meant to do a little more, but after two hours I was more than ready to go home.

Sunday’s workout:  2 mile run, 30 minutes on the elliptical, abs.. Boring.

Saturday, after much couch time and cuddling with Derby, the fave and I walked over to the science museum to see the Body Worlds exhibit.  It’s only taken me four years to walk the half mile to the museum, so I feel like that’s a win in itself.

Body Worlds is a really neat exhibit (neat if you like looking at dead people and bones and organs and brains) featuring plasticized human bodies and shows how disease and negative lifestyle choices impact the body.

These aren’t my images, but here are a couple of the things we saw.

Here is a video for more information.

Overall it was really interesting.  If you live in the area, I’d definitely make my way over to the museum.  I think the exhibit is there for another couple of weeks.

Annnnnnnnnnd wish me luck… back to work today!

And I’m back.

Wednesday’s workout:  30 minutes on the elliptical, 1 mile run, arms

Thursday’s workout:  5 mile run, 10 minute bike

Friday’s workout:  none so far and none planned… Hi off day, I’ve missed you!

Last chance to enter PB2 Giveaway!!

Well, after five full days at the beach, it was time to come home.  Luckily, it was raining when we left so I didn’t feel so bad leaving early… although it rained all week so it would have been nice to see that pretty ol’ sun again.

Some unimpressive pics from vacation:

flash mob

We had lunch outside one afternoon (after the rain stopped), and this huge group suddenly showed up in matching t’s.  We were hoping for a flash mob, but no dice.  It looked like some weird adult scavenger hunt. With fanny packs.

sunset

Sunset from our balcony.  It seemed to clear up every evening around 8.   Perfect timing, if you ask me.

beachday

Me enjoying a second of the few hours of sun I got all week.  Also you can see the nice dark clouds in the background.

meth

Aaaaaaaaaaand somewhere on the drive home in rural NC, we saw lots of meth signs.  This was my favorite.  There was also one right across from the high school.  Someone needs to tell Walter White ASAP.

Ever seen a real flash mob?

Dear Rain, Go Away

Monday’s workout:   6 mile run, 15 minutes of various arm exercises

I started Monday out with a run outside…but unfortunately, it started pouring on me almost immediately.  So, after four miles (and soaking wet shoes) I headed to the 1977 gym to finish my run.

On the plus side, the clouds force me to workout instead of being outside and burning my skin off and “turning into a leather bag”… as the fave likes to so nicely put it.

On the downside.. it’s cloudy and rainy.  And I’m on vacation.  Clouds aren’t allowed at the beach!!!! I want suuuuuuuuuun.

Tuesday’s workout:  5 mile run, 20 minutes arms

More of the same on Tuesday.  It was rainy and cloudy and gross outside…so I had a short run on the ol tready.   My Achilles tendons are both starting to hurt (or something in that general area of my legs), and I like to think it’s because the treadmill sucks ass, not because I’m actually hurt.

So we’ve been here three days, and most of the time it’s looked like this:

raining

And this:

cloudy

Needless to say, it hasn’t been a beach-y vacation, but it’s been a relaxing one.  I’ve read two books, watched some movies, and relaxed… all while listening to the sound of the ocean waves.

It’s not my ideal beach vacay, but I’ll take it.

Plus, I’ve gotten to spend a lot of quality time with my favorite person ever.   He’s gotten to see how big of a book nerd I actually am… so it all works out.

I’m hoping for two full days of sun before we head home Friday (thanks, work) so at the very least, I can look like I’ve gone somewhere outside of the Richmond area.

Here’s to sun.

What’s your favorite beach drink?

PB2 Giveaway!

Friday’s workout- 5 mile run, 15 min bike, abs

Saturday’s workout- “body pump” aka an hour of class without music and doing random weight lifting moves; one million trips up and down the stairs to unload our belongings since the elevator (of course) was broken

Sunday’s workout- 10 minutes on the elliptical and 4 miles on the 1977 style treadmill in the ‘resort’ gym… I felt like I worked a million times harder than usual, and four miles was  more than enough to make my legs start to hurt.   At least I did something on vacation, right?

So this week marks my big one year blogging anniversary.  I’m celebrating by being on vacation, worshipping the sun gods, and trying to keep my mind clear of that thing that is called ‘work’, which starts next week.

So, you might have noticed I’m having yet another giveaway…and this one might be the best one yet!

I’ve been using PB2—powdered peanut butter—for the last couple of months and ILOVEIT.   We all know that peanut butter is amazing…buuuuuut it’s easy to overdo it.  I love putting peanut butter in my oatmeal, but then my breakfast ends up being just as many calories as my lunch and my snacks and my dinner combined.

When my bff Dru told me about PB2, I was like, “Um what, Judo?  How have I never heard of this stuff?”

What it is is powdered peanut butter- it comes in a jar like regular peanut butter, but you mix a couple of tablespoons of it with a tablespoon of water and voila!  You get peanut butter that is only 45 calories.

Obviously I wanted some immediately…but it’s not sold everywhere yet and I couldn’t find it anywhere.  Fail.

When I contacted them saying I wanted to do a giveaway because I needed to bribe people to read this thing, I’m pretty sure they felt bad for me because they immediately agreed AND sent me my own box full of goodies.

pb2 pack

It came with a jar of regular PB2, a jar of chocolate PB2 and 2 packs of PB thins- think tiny peanut butter cookies.

nutrition

There’s 45 calories in 2 tablespoons of the powder, plus 5grams of protein.  And, only a tiny bit of fat and sugar.  Obviously I immediately tried it out.

pb2

Yep.  Looks and tastes just like healthy peanut butter (I mean- I’ll be honest, it’s no Cookie Butter, but really, what matches that?), and you can make it as thick or thin as you want depending on how much water you add.

The tiny little cookies are delicious too.  They’re kind of addictive, so I had to hide them from myself after a few days.

chips

chips nutrition

I like the regular flavored PB2 better than the chocolate (mainly because I’m not normally a chocolate person anyway… I know, it’s sad).

I’ve used it in everything from oatmeal to english muffins to smoothies… and it never fails to impress.

english muffin smoothie pb2

I think I might like it in smoothies the best, but I’ve been on a smoothie kick lately sooooooooooo that might be it.

Anyway, one of you lucky ducky readers gets to win your own party pack of PB2!
