It’s already Monday?

Sunday’s workout:  6 mile run, 53 minutes.  Nothing special about this run, although I did get to watch the pilot of Nashville on my Kindle…and I really like it.  It kept me entertained for 42 minutes and included good music and slutty Hayden Panettiere and romance and politics.  What more does a show need?

1.  I ended last week with 27 miles.  Not amazing, but not terrible considering I didn’t run for 3 days.  I only made it to one body pump class and I felt weaker than ever.   Goal for this week- at least 25 miles and 2 body pumps.

2.  The fave and  I finally watched the season premiers of Homeland and Dexter this weekend.  Holy sweet heaven…Dexter was sooooo good.  My hands were sweaty the entire show and I’m pretty sure I drank a bottle of wine in the hour.

(I’m blaming my nerves for the wine.   I’m actually getting nervous just thinking about it right now…might be time for another glass.)

3.  Derby found a new plaything this weekend.

A tampon.

Don’t worry, it’s unused.

When I came home Saturday a chewed up tampon wrapper was in the middle of the room (tampon still inside).  I used to throw her mouse to her and say, “Go get that dirty ol’ mouse, Derby”, so I guess I’ll have to change it to “Go get that dirty ol’ tampon, Derby”…although it has kind of a gross ring to it.

Luckily, she’s getting exercise while trying to capture the dirty ol’ tampon, so whatever.  If she loses weight by chasing a tampon around the apartment, then so be it.

4.  I had grand plans to make delicious chicken enchiladas Saturday night for dinner.  The fave requested ‘some sort of bean dip’ first, so I made my healthy take on 7 layer dip- beans, taco mix, greek yogurt, salsa, veggies, and cheese.

And then that became dinner.

Bean dip and chips.

Healthy eating at it’s finest around here.

5.  Fall is currently residing in Richmond.  Yesterday it was like 55 degrees and cloudy and rainy.   What happened to the awesome fall weather, like 60’s and crisp and sunny?

I’m hoping the dreary weather heads on out soon, because indoor recess is not exactly something that gets me excited.

6.  Congrats to my friend Robin for running the Chicago Marathon this weekend!  You inspired me to drag my a$$ to the gym for 53 minutes.  Thank you.

Bean dip for dinner- yes or no?

Three Things Thursday

1.  Guess who lost 7 ounces over two years?!?!?!

This little boo bear!!  Go Derby!  We are now down to 15 lbs 4 oz!  It only took two years, two different automatic feeders, and a little crack down on the bag chewing…

Is it weird I feel really bad posting this picture of her on the Internet?  It’s just a bad angle guys, I swear she doesn’t look that big in real life.  I swear.

2.  Raise your hand if you are going to watch the show, Married to Jonas?  Now slap yourself in the face.

It’s the new reality show that follows Danielle and Kevin Jonas…no?

Okay, well basically it’s a Newlyweds (sigh) spinoff with the Jonas’.  Sounds interesting.

Danielle says, “I just feel like this made us communicate more, and I think that’s important in our relationship and keeps it strong.”

Um.  Let’s take a little look back at all the marriages that reality TV have ‘helped’.

I’m actually still sad about that one.

The following, not so much.

Bottom line:  Reality shows make your marriage last.  For-ev-er.

3. Speaking of TV, lately the fave and I have been getting into American Horror Story.

I feel like a wimp when I watch this show.

It is Scary, capital S.  I mean, is everyone dead?  Is the family dead?  Why can they see all the dead people?  I’m so confused and so scared and so entertained at the same time.

I love it.

Speaking of dead cheerleader (see above), I really wish I could share with you my dead cheerleader Halloween costume in college.  Boy was I gross.  Everyone else went slutty… I went… dead.

Do you watch American Horror?  Do you love it as much as I do?

Any tricks to get Derbs a half a pound skinnier? Exercising is out of the question… and so is taking away more food.  Get creative.

Don’t forget…sweet giveaway going on!

8 miles before school? Crazy.

I knew Friday was going to be a busy day since the fave’s BFF and wife were coming to town, so I had to wake up before Derby to get to the gym to do my long run.

Okay, that’s a lie.  Derby was already up.

I got up at 5 and completed an 8 mile run before school.  It was amazing for two reasons.

1.  I actually did it.

2.  I didn’t have any foot pain!

It took about 71 minutes and an episode and a half of Downton Abbey.  My legs didn’t feel like lead and my lungs actually worked, so it was perfect all around.

Plus,  I had the secret ladies gym all to myself until Anna Anorexia came in and glared at me for having a bagel (in a bag) on the treadmill (sometimes I get hungry working out early in the morning…. I thought it would be smart to have on hand, just in case).  What I wanted to do was just rip open the bag and chow down on the bagel… but then I wouldn’t have finished the run.

So I didn’t… and the run felt great.

We had Zumba before school for Fitness Club, and the girls started to really get into it.  We’ve got a few of them signed up for the 1 mile Fun Run for the Monument 10k (thanks to Sportsbackers for waiving the entry fee!), so it looks like all this fitness/ exercising talk is paying off!

Friday night the fave and I went to dinner with his BFF and wife at Zeus Gallery Cafe.  We’ve been there a couple of times and I always get the shrimp and grits.  I’m one of those people who orders the same thing every time if I like something.  This time though, I decided to be adventurous and branch out and get some sort of tile fish with quinoa.  It was pretty good, but I missed the bacon-y grits that came with the shrimp.  I just need to stick to what I know from now on.

Yesterday’s workout was pretty boring and almost not worth mentioning, if not for the fact that I’m in the middle of my LAST episode of Downton Abbey and there have been a couple of shocking events.  I did 40 minutes on the red elliptical and 15 minutes on the stair stepper, plus a tiny little arm circuit.  I’ve only got about 25 minutes left of the show and am really worried about how I’m ever going to workout without TV again.

Last night, after hearing the news of Whitney Houston’s death (just as sad as Bernie Mac…maybe even more so), I downed some wine and smoked gouda.

wine whitney

Okay, that’s a lie.  I was doing that waaaaaaay before the news broke of W.H.’s death.  Obviously.  It being Saturday night and all.

This morning I woke up to this little booger snuggling down under the covers.

She was not amused with my picture taking annoying-ness.  Luckily, this picture was taken after I woke up on my own (not by Derby at 3:15), so we were friends.

My Sunday consists of cleaning, laundry and gym… if I can ever get off the couch and from under the covers.   It’s 20 degrees out… going to take a little extra motivation today!

It’s all broken.

All of it.  My legs, my Garmin, and my ipod.

Stupid running and stupid gadgets.

(Remember that time I hated my Garmin?  This was just like that.)

Yesterday after school,  I had planned on going to the gym for the sole purpose of finishing Season 1 of Shameless.. but because it was in the 60’s, I figured I might as well get in an outdoor run.

Welp, a block in I realized that my ipod wasn’t locked… it just wasn’t working.  Sweet.  I’m praying that it just needed a battery charge.  I was tempted to just call it a day, but since I was already outside and in gym clothes, I figured I might as well go.

Another couple of blocks in, I noticed that although my Garmin was tracking my time, it was not tracking my distance.  Awesome.

My legs felt like lead and the orthies hurt, but I figure that I ran a little over 4 miles and can check it off the list.  Not great, but more than I had planned after my ipod didn’t work.

My thoughts and hopes and dreams can only carry me so far without music… luckily, that gave me time to watch out for sticks and goose poop and meandering pedestrians in the middle of the sidewalks.

When I got home, I decided to do a quick arm circuit.  I did this 3x with about a minute rest in between each set.  Overhead presses kill me.  K.I.L.L. me.  I hate them, I’ve decided.

  • 30 alternating bicep curls
  • 20 triceps
  • 20 triceps dips
  • 30 alternating lateral raises
  • 20 overhead press
  • 20 upright rows
  • 50 crunches
  • 50 bicycle crunches
  • 25 leg up crunches
  • 25 in and outs

Although I like doing circuits at home better than at the gym (obviously it’s because I can watch How I Met Your Mother  and also because the judgmental trainers can’t stare at my lameness), I have much less motivation to actually complete them.  At one point during my circuit I just laid on the ground…motivation = zero.

The rest of yesterday was okay… tough after a sleepless that involved waking up at 3:50 and tossing and turning until about 5:30.  I hate it when that happens.

Luckily, someone in my house had a nice night of sleep before waking at 4 for breakfast and a little run around the apartment to get the heart rate up.  You know what they say, morning exercise does a body good.

Obviously the book I was reading aloud to her wasn’t keeping her interest.

Do you workout with music?  If not, can you train me to not be so reliant on mine?

Handy Dandy

I love lazy Sundays.

I also love lazy Sundays that turn into productive Sundays.

Yesterday, after approximately 2.5 hours of lying in bed drinking coffee (which came after 10+ hours of sleep), fave-ster and I decided to make the Sunday trek to the gym.

I thought we had agreed upon a full day of rest (you know, like God and Chick-fil-a intended) and a full day of movies and tv, but because it was so sunny and pretty we are going to hold off until next weekend.  I reeeeeeeally want to start season 4 of Dexter…hint, hint, hint.

I was a little sore from my humongous 6 miler Saturday (I get it.  It’s going to take awhile to get back), so after we ran the mile to the gym I decided on the red elliptical (30 minutes) and the stair stepper (10 minutes) before doing abs and walking a mile home.  I have just one episode left of Shameless and I have to say, I’m kind of sad about it.  Even though every episode I thank God that my life isn’t what’s on TV, it really helps pass the time when doing cardio, for which I’ve had ADD during lately.  My gym cannot be counted on for good, recent trashy mags either.  I need some new shows.

When I got home I made a surprisingly delicious protein shake (2 scoops Aria powder, 1 cup vanilla almond milk, 1/2 banana, 2 handfuls of spinach and a little cocoa powder).

I decided to finally tackle Derby’s automatic feeder.

As you know, the pea brained little sneaker figured out how to stick her paw up into the turning mechanism and pick out food.  Unfortunately for me, this took out all the usefulness of actually having an automatic feeder.  Being the handy person I am (which isn’t much… my dad gave me the idea), and also being the fed up cat owner that’s been woken up at 4am lately for breakfast, I decided I was going to fix it or die trying.

I cut up a Greek yogurt lid and taped it behind the little plastic things that Derby’s bent out of shape.

fixed feeder

Guess what… it works.  Hallelujah and praise Jesus!

No longer can Derby get her grubby little paw up in there… and finally, I can turn the thing back on and forget about waking up at 4am.  I suddenly became handy and Derby suddenly is stalking around my apartment looking for crumbs.

Poor girl… but I’m pretty sure she’d eat me out of house and home if I let her.

My accomplishment gave me the energy to talk the fave into going shopping (!!!) for some new bathroom stuff for his house (towels, rugs, accessories).  No bathroom stuff today, but we did end up purchasing some really cute end tables for the bedrooms!  Thank goodness because my side has been a TV tray for the last 2 years.

In our little adventure out in civilization, I managed to spend a boatload of money at World Market on random food items including gummy peaches.  Seemed like such a good idea at the time.  I also bought a set of 12 dinner forks— this may not sound like much to you, but as of a few months ago, I only had 3 forks.  I’m not sure what happened to the rest of them, but they are no where to be found, and rewashing 3 forks all week was turning into a pain.

All of that activity really upped my appetite, so margharita pizza it was.

marg pizza (Old picture, same delicious pizza.)

After three cheesy slices and a piece of garlic bread, it was bedtime.

Perfect weekend.  I was handy, I had a good run, and I got to eat my favorite pizza (order of importance from least to greatest).

Did you do anything super handy this weekend?
